“Men Feel Too: A Call for Compassion During Men’s Mental Health Month”

June is Men’s Mental Health Month—a time to raise awareness, offer support, and dismantle the silent suffering so many men carry.

June is Men’s Mental Health Month—a time to raise awareness, offer support, and help dismantle the silent suffering many men experience.

For generations, men have been taught to “man up,” “stay strong,” and “hold it together.” But true strength isn’t found in silence—it’s found in honesty, vulnerability, and the courage to seek help when needed.

The Hidden Struggles of Men’s Mental Health

Men experience anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and overwhelming life pressures just as anyone else does. Yet, many hesitate to reach out for support due to:

  • Cultural expectations around masculinity

  • Fear of being judged or appearing weak

  • Lack of safe spaces to process emotions

  • Limited models of emotional expression

This hesitation can have heartbreaking consequences.

Suicide Rates Among Men: A Quiet Crisis

While suicide is not the leading cause of death for men overall, it remains one of the top causes of death for younger and middle-aged men in the U.S.

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for men ages 25–34.

  • It remains in the top five causes of death for men up to age 44.

  • Overall, men account for nearly 80% of all suicide deaths.

  • Men often use more lethal means, making suicide attempts more likely to end in death.

Behind these statistics are countless fathers, brothers, partners, sons, coworkers, and friends who may be suffering quietly, unsure how to ask for help.

How We Can Support Men’s Mental Health

Men need to know: It’s okay to not be okay.

Here are ways we can show up for the men we care about:

  • Ask deeper questions: “How are you really doing lately?”

  • Normalize therapy and emotional check-ins.

  • Listen without trying to immediately fix.

  • Encourage open dialogue about stress, fears, and emotions.

  • Remind them that healing isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of wisdom.

Therapy for Men: A Safe Space to Heal

In therapy, men are offered a space free of judgment where they can explore:

  • Unspoken stressors

  • Relationship challenges

  • Fatherhood pressures

  • Career burnout

  • Past traumas

  • Grief and loss

  • Emotional regulation and resilience

At The Practice Counseling Services, we honor each individual’s story. Therapy is not about being broken—it’s about building tools, understanding oneself, and creating a healthier path forward.

Men feel too. Their emotions matter. Their healing matters. And they deserve a safe space to begin that journey.
